Helen Nelson Grant

Helen Nelson Grant is the Vice-Chairman and Secretary of
Grant Business Strategies, Inc.
Ms.Grant received her Juris Doctor degree from Duke University
School of Law in 1984 and she has been a licensed attorney in the state
of South Carolina for 16 years. She was formerly a partner in the law
firm of Gergel, Nickles & Grant, P.A., Columbia, South Carolina, where
her practice was focused in the areas of employment, domestic relations
and other civil litigation matters. Ms. Grant has extensive experience
in administrative hearings before local school boards where she represented
educational employees.
Ms. Grant is a 1981 graduate of Columbia College, Columbia
South Carolina where she received her Bachelor's degree in history and
public affairs.
An active participant in the community, Ms. Grant has served
on the Board of the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties,
South Carolina; the Board of Directors for the Richland Memorial Hospital
Center for Cancer Treatment and Research; Richland County School District
One Blue Ribbon Steering Committee (which provided guidelines to the district
on the expenditure of funds approved in a local bond referendum); and
the Duke University School of Law Advisory Board. She has held membership
in the American Bar Association, the Richland County Bar Association,
the Columbia Lawyers Association and the South Carolina Black Lawyers
Association.
Ms. Grant serves on the Board of Trustees of her alma marta,
Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina. She has held the positions
of Secretary and Vice-Chairman of the Board and she was the first African
American and the youngest person to hold the position of Chairman of the
Board of Trustees. Ms. Grant continues to be active with Columbia College
and is the current chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board.
A resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, Ms. Grant is a
member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. In previous years, she has served
as a member of the Missionary Society, Steward Board and choirs. Currently,
Ms. Grant is a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Stephen United
Methodist Church Preschool and she volunteers at her children's schools.
Ms. Grant and her husband have two sons and twin daughters.
